This Lodge is a luxury eco-lodge situated on 230ha and is situated in the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal near to Giants Castle. What makes our lodge particularly special is that we offer accommodation in a luxury cave. This is an accommodation unit built under a rock. Glass doors open onto a wooden deck with hammock chairs and a spectacular view of the Drakensberg Mountains. This is a luxury eco experience. The cave is cozy and comfortable with features like a Jacuzzi spa bath and a fireplace and even has rock art on its walls.
We also offer a private dining experience where we setup a table on the deck of your cave and you dine by candlelight under the stars.
This Lodge is one of those smaller owner-run establishments with 18 accommodation units as either Mountain View suites or Garden view suites.
Sustainability and responsible tourism are a huge part of the ethos of our lodge and we subscribe as much as possible to the farm to plate concept. We cook all our meals from scratch and have our own organic vegetable garden. We have our own chickens for eggs, cows for milk and bake our own bread and we even make our own cheese.
This Lodge also offers horse trails ideally suited to beginners. Hot air balloon flights that launch from the lawn in front of the lodge in partnership with Hot Air Ballooning SA and our newest attraction is our star gazing hammock camp where we tell the Zulu stories of the stars.
The area offers a lot with spectacular hiking trails with dramatic views and waterfalls. And then there is the spectacular bushman rock art where you can see some of the best examples in the world.
This Lodge is also the start of the Giants Castle Slack packing trail a 3-night luxury hike where we transport your luggage to the next lodge for you that is easy with 1 day through the Zulu Waters Private Game Reserve. We have also developed an abseiling site to add to adventure activities.
Additionally to tourism Ant-bear Lodge also hosts retreats, weddings and functions. We currently don't monetize the agricultural potential of the property but it is ideal for beef farming or cutting thatch grass.

Real Property Included
You will be spoiled for choice here. Currently, the owners are living in the farmhouse and have the garden cottage available to their own private guests. The lodge has 5 ensuite units allocated as staff/manager accommodation that are not part of the 18 guest rooms
The honest answer is that we are situated in the middle of nowhere. It's a perfect base to explore both the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands. Spectacular uninterrupted views and less than 20km off the N3 so particularly well-positioned. Generally, our clients visit Kamberg and Giants Castle and the Midlands Meander. The location has a very low crime rate.
The property extent is 230ha and is prime agricultural land in the Bushmans River Valley.
Business Buildings: Lodge, Wedding Chapel, 18 Accommodation units, staff accommodation & storage. Approx 2500 square meters in total.
Farm Buildings: Farmhouse, Garden Cottage, Workshop Sheds. Old dairy under partial restoration. (Approx 2000 square meters in total)
Electric Fence: The buildings are fenced in (approx 4ha) with an electric fence and security gates.
Water: The property has a natural spring that flows 365 days a year. Water is stored in a 600 000 litre underground reservoir creating huge water security. There are additionally 2 dams which have water infrastructure that can also be used.
Power: 2 Eskom transformers on the property. 3phase at the lodge and single-phase at the farmhouse. The bulk of the electric geysers have been replaced with gas geysers as part of our program to get completely off grid.
Airstrip: 750m running north-south.

Another 3 units can be created in existing infrastructure where all services already exist. There are opportunities to build 5 more luxury cave units. The lodge already has the capacity to deal with an expansion of 30 beds before additional lodge infrastructure is required. The lodge has 5 units allocated as staff/manager accommodation that are not part of the 18 rooms. Some of these units could also be converted to guest accommodation by simply equipping them with appropiate furniture.
There are other tourism accommodation businesses in the greater area. Generally, we don't see each other as competition though rather we work together. There are no similar lodges to Antbear Lodge offering this sustainalble tourism ethos. The nearest is Three Tree Hill appox 100km away.
My wife and I are moving into the next stage of our lives. We both have a newly discovered passion for travel which we would like to realise before we are too old to do that. While shorter trips have been possible leaving the lodge in the capable hands of our staff, to travel the world for a number of years is not an option. So while we are not in a desperate situation to urgently sell we are also chopping at the bit to explore the world. We have loved living here and the Antbear has been exceptionally good to us and it is with pride that we pass on this legacy to someone new

Flexible as to what is required. We already have our current operating procedures documented and depending on what you need training and support will be negotiated. This is a simple business model so not much training is required.
