1.History of business
The business is a family-owned superfood line, born and bred in the bushveld of South Africa. We created the product range to fuel our family through many adventures in the great outdoors. With much trial and error, lots of playtime in the kitchen and a foodies’ dream in mind, we substituted our favorite commercial products with homemade, healthier and yummier alternatives.
In the midst of lockdown our everyday home snacks and healthy staples turned into a business selling a Gourmet Superfood line. We launched the brand in Hoedspruit in August 2020. Before we knew it we were cooking non-stop trying to keep up with the demand while doing our regular day jobs. The business has been profitable from day one with a growing following and returning customers. We were amazed how the business grew by word of mouth crossing provincial borders without any initial marketing.

Currently the business can be run from a well equipped kitchen.
The business is based in Hoedspruit, Limpopo at the moment but could be run from anywhere. We have made contact and built great working relationships with the best possible suppliers around South Africa, these include farmers, distributors and local organizations assisting local communities to market and sell their produce. The business is proud to source our produce and services, locally in South Africa.
3.Description of products and services
The business produces healthy gourmet foods from: Superfood Granola’s, Gourmet Nut Butters, Superseeded Rusks, Superfood Granola bars & Deluxe trail mixes. All of which are produced with no additives, preservatives, flavourings, colourants or refined sugars. All our products are free of hidden poisons. We do only real whole foods, with no compromise on taste, it’s healthy made delicious!
Brand Identity and ethos
But there is more to it than taste, the business is a living philosophy: Eat Local, think Global. Eat local because it is the healthiest way to eat. Food grown in our soil will provide us with the freshest food, and the right nutrients to thrive in our unique climate and landscape. Eat local because by buying local, you support your local farmer, your neighbours, the families in your town and together we work towards the prosperity of our country. The business sources all of its ingredients locally, choosing only the finest organic, ethically grown South African produce.
Think Global because it is our responsibility to care for our planet, our collective home. Think Global when you shop and choose to support a brand that acts sustainably. Our choices matter. So let's make better ones, together. The business uses only reusable, compostable and 100% plastic-free packaging. We leave no trace, but a great taste in your mouth.
The business has a strong brand identity on social media.
Our active Facebook and Instagram accounts have high engagement levels with a fast growing follower base. With our first social media campaign, our success rates were beyond expectation, engagement driving customers to our e-commerce website moving the sites positioning on google from the 9th page to the 1st page in 48hours. Conversion rates and ROI proved excellent, and many customers throughout the country now order directly from our ecommerce site.
The social media platforms are not simply a place to advertise our products. Our goal is to create a loyal, engaged and passionate following. Our strategy, and look and feel online is carefully curated to create a community around the brand. We share healthy recipes, excellent bush getaways and beautiful African images, in addition to our products.
The IG and FB pages are 100% set up and integrated with our e-commerce, with the shop functions active and optimized on both platforms.
The business has been featured on the local radio channel Hoedspruit FM for a full hour interview digging into where the authenticity of the brand originated. Local newspaper Kruger2Canyons has just featured Bush Bites as the Nr1 Local find of the month on a full page piece.
Word of mouth
The business concept is extremely attractive to customers, this has spread the brand name far and wide via word of mouth. The target market is vast as it is equally appealing with locals and foreign tourists. Giving all a “taste of the bushveld” to enjoy on holiday or to have in your home.
We have done two professional product range shoots with renowned International food photographer.
A fully functional stylish e-commerce website handling orders, stock counts, courier costs and online pay portal automates the majority of order fulfillment.
The photoshoots were done specifically with the website design in mind.
Giving the website a crisp clean feel which is easy to navigate. Pixel, SEO and social media optimization are all integrated with the website.
We have attended local markets monthly to spread the brand image and solidify the brands presence, when possible with lockdown regulations. Every time, it has been an incredible success, both in sales and marketing. In December 2020 the business was invited to the historically famous Kamers Makers Artisanal Christmas market in Johannesburg, indicating the strong presence the brand has created for itself. We are now an approved vendor for Kamers market securing Bush Bites a spot in future, exclusive markets.
5. Prospects for company
With healthy eating being one of the most marketable concepts in todays market place, the organic growth prospects of the business are well above average.
A recent study has shown that people are willing to spend 28% more on health promoting foods than in 2019. Not only has being healthy become trendy, it has become one of the best reasons to spend more money.
Currently the business has consistent orders from 8 shops a direct line of sales, and supplying 4 businesses.
Wellness large scale retailers
The opportunity for growth is huge, perhaps too big for us to handle and take advantage of.
Contact has been made with larger scale chain health shops and wellness retailers, all of whom have shown interest. The Wellness Warehouse, to name one. Outsourcing production or upscaling in home industry could really boost the business outreach. Currently we are barely keeping up with the demand.
The Kruger National Park’s, “The Park’s shop” have shown keen interest in the brand as the concept fits perfectly with their image: brand name, sustainability and conservation.
The same company managing these specialize in travel retail, also serving airports retail.
This opens up a whole new market, as the business brand is not simply a product but a concept talking to the consumer instilling hope for a better future for our planet.
With the elegant yet simple packaging, our products serve as great gifts taking home a taste of the Bushveld or a taste of Africa for foreign tourists. Creating an excellent space for the brand to penetrate the lodge tourism sector.
Healthy made delicious, granola bars and trail mixes have been some of our best performers. With South Africa being a melting pot of outdoor activities attracting young and old. From hiking, mountain biking, trail running or just a snack on the go these nutritionally dense products have become a favourite for owners of Adventure travel companies, bush trail companies, and their customers alike.
The business serves selected boutique roadside shops, independent country stores and coffee shops along travel routes.
We have only touched on Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng with the Cape Town Market opportunity being untouched.
