Running a childcare business is something that requires passion and hard work. It is, however, also a great industry to invest in at the moment.

Overview

There are more and more families in South Africa that have two working parents or single-parent families. Almost 40% of households in South Africa are headed by women.

As school is only available for children from six or seven, childcare and nurseries for children younger than this and for children after school hours are in demand.

This has created room for entrepreneurs to run childcare businesses that provide these services. If you have a passion for childcare and a good head for business, this is a sector in which you can find success. 

Type of business

The advantage of this sector is the range of types of businesses that can provide the services that are needed. From small home-based businesses to larger centres that cater to different child age ranges and have multiple employees, there is a business opportunity that will suit you. 

You will need to decide on the number of children that your business will be able to care for as well as the ages of the children.

Regulations

Childcare facilities in South Africa, understandably, have to abide by strict regulations. Any staff member needs to be between the ages of 18 and 60. Each staff member will also need to have medical clearance and to be trained in first aid. 

There are also regulations as to how many staff are required per number of children depending on the ages of the children.

Market research

Although a childcare nursery can seem like a business that already targets a narrow market, you will still need to identify who your specific audience is.

Make sure you are clear on the type of nursery and the number of staff members that you will have. Once you are clear on the services that you are going to provide, you can create a marketing strategy that will appeal to them.

Your location will also affect who your target audience is. If you are in a small community, you might not be able to offer a particularly niche service. Setting up your business in a city will mean there is a wider audience and having a more specific service will, in fact, be beneficial to you.

Before you buy a childcare nursery, you must be sure that there will be enough interest in it so that you can keep building your business and making it a success!
