Romantiques is a well-established landmark shop. A one-of-its-kind vintage/collectible store drawing customers from far and wide with its impressive wide and varied selection of stock. The store was established on 1 July 2006 from small beginnings, starting with a girl who needed work after school and her friend joining in the adventure. Within 2 years, they expand to such an extent that two new owners bought in and the business split into 4 separately owned businesses, each being complementary to the others. Each owner specialises in their different departments regarding research, price, sales etc. and as such creating a unique one-stop store. Currently housed in a superbly located heritage building in the CBD of Hermanus. Well-suited to the shop with a lovely spacious garden, fish pond, deck area and the best of all, private parking. Two entrances, wheelchair friendly and an area that is rigged as a kitchen, A container provides additional storage. Very reasonable rent is paid and a long term lease agreement is in place and available to an approved purchaser.
The store has anything from vintage to collectible and antiques. Different departments consist of fine porcelain, costume to gold jewellery, crystal and silver to vintage clothing and accessories. A wide variety of silver plated items and cutlery, books and stationery as well as a medical/laboratory section. Taxidermy and shells, smoking collectibles, kitchen ware ranging from tins to brass, copper and enamel. Gramophones, musical instruments, retro to collectible model cars, Dinky Toys, tinplate and other toys as well as clocks and watches. Movie memorabilia, a military section focusing more on Southern African related wars, including medals, badges, clothing, swords and bayonets and pocket knives. Enamel signs, automobilia, tools and gardening. There is a variety available for all ages. and that is why the shop has become a family destination.
Added to this is a private cinema where there is a matinee of vintage films every Saturday, just like in the olden days, with popcorn and even an old fashioned sweets counter and original 1950's Coke vending machine, as a service to customers. Another form of entertainment is a giant outdoor chess set. Though busier during peak season, a regular flow of customers visits the shop throughout the year. The stock is acquired from private people selling to the shop and from runners who source stock as well as new items from suppliers for the retro and toys. Notwithstanding the fact that the store does not advertise, it has been featured in magazines, newspapers , TV and radio over the years.
